SGLBA Sponsors Team Sydney

Team Sydney's association with SGLBA goes back to the 1990s. SGLBA was the first sponsoring organisation to support Sydney's three bids to host, eventually, Gay Games VI 2002.

Early in 2010, Team Sydney was offered sponsorship for the design and manufacture of our Gay Games VIII uniform.  Unfortunately, this sponsor withdrew at short notice, leaving a large short-fall in our funding.  We were facing a situation where we might have to charge the full cost of the uniform to the athletes.

With great supplier co-operation, Team Sydney was able to source an alternative uniform.   And SGLBA came to the rescue with a very supportive grant.

This grant has been used in four ways for Gay Games VIII Cologne:

  • As a subsidy towards the individual uniform cost, significantly reducing the cost to athletes,

  • To buy bandanas for athletes to wear and wave during the Opening Ceremony march-in,

  • To design and make a 2.5m x 1m banner on which the SGLBA logo is featured.  The banner will lead the Team Sydney contingent during march-in and will be displayed at various venues throughout the Games, and

  • To defray the costs associated with the Australian Ambassadorial reception in Cologne.

Regretably, a very short production time precluded having the SGLBA logo on our shirts.  Other signage for use in Cologne features the SGLBA logo in recognition of the support given.

Part of the SGLBA grant has been allocated for "Sports Day Out", at a date to be confirmed in September or October 2010.

Sports Day Out is held annually with many demonstration/participation sports being showcased on the day. Team Sydney’s clubs use this event to canvass for new members.  Hopefully, we will again have the use of the gymnasium and sports fields in and around Sydney Boys High School for this joint venture with SGLBA.

Further details will follow as they are confirmed.
